CHAPTER 13

“Have any problems finding the house?” Marty asked as she opened the door and motioned for Carl to come in.

“No, just plugged it into my GPS, and I was good to go. Interesting residential area for nice antiques. I usually don’t see many things of value in an area like this, and if there are any, they were usually inherited.”

“That’s pretty much the case here, although what you’ll be appraising, the books, is a collection by my client’s husband,” Marty said.

“I see that Patron is here. Anything I should know about?” Carl asked, as he bent down to pet the big dog. They’d become fast friends when threats had been made on Carl’s life a few months earlier, and Patron had stayed at his home and protected him.

“Well, there was a little incident this morning,” Marty said.

“Just tell me Laura wasn’t involved, and I can handle it,” Carl said.

When Marty said, “She wasn’t involved,” Carl visibly relaxed. Then she told him about the theft she’d discovered at the storage unit earlier that morning as well as the burglary unit at the police station being involved.

“Jeff became concerned about me being here alone before you got here, so he went home and picked up Patron. He felt better knowing that Patron would be here even though Jeff and one of the policemen in the burglary unit completely checked out the premises and determined that everything was fine. No one was here, and there was no evidence of anyone having been here.”

“What did your client say about the theft?” Carl asked.

“She doesn’t know about it. Mrs. Espinoza is at a spa located just outside of town for a few days, you know, the one that doesn’t allow any contact with their guests when they’re in there. She’s due home tomorrow, so I’ll have to tell her then.”

“What about her husband?” Carl asked.

“He’s away on police business. I might have mentioned that he’s actually a detective and technically works under Jeff, but not directly, so he doesn’t know anything about it either.”

“Well, as long as Jeff felt it was safe for you to work here, that makes me feel a lot better. And particularly with Patron being here. Show me where the books are,” Carl said, as he picked up his appraisal gear.

“The study is down the hall. Last door on the left,” Marty said as they walked towards it.

After Carl had walked in and looked around for a few minutes, he said, “Interesting. This guy collects all over the board. Most book collectors have a special area, but there’s about every genre in the world represented here. Looks to me like he was strictly going after what would be a deal. Wish I had a list of what he paid for the books.”

“My client never mentioned one, although you’d think he might have one in a desk drawer or on his computer, but those are off limits to us. He has to have some way of knowing whether or not he’s made money on a book.
